^_^

Last year, it was February 13th (it was a Wednesday I believe, or maybe it was Thursday? I think it was Wednesday), a week after I had saved a local cat from being stuck on my roof. The neighbor cat had a family already (in fact, several), so we decided to go rescue a kitteh that had no family. We walked into petsmart and saw this face:

Actually, what we saw was too sad for me to take a picture - it was that face, curled up in the corner of a cage Sad

All other kittehs were lookin at us, but she was in a corner, hiding from the world outside the cage Sad

Her name was Sunshine, and she wanted a home.

So we said - "Nobody wants that kitteh, we reskyus her!"

I am sorry I cannot resist SNORT speek when talkin' 'bout my Sunshine ^_^

So, nobody was there! We could not rescue her Sad

We had to wait.

We came back on Saturday, the 16th. We walked in and there was Judy, the woman who runs Recycled Critter Rescue at PetSmart. She's an awesome lady. We start talking about Sunshine, and lo and behold, we find out she had been in there for 3 months.

3 MONTHS!

To top it off, you know why she was put in prison for 3 months?! SHE HAD KITTENS!!! Her only crime. She had kittens at the college years of just over 2. (I just found out that 2 years old is equal to 24 human years for kittehs - I always thought they were teenagers at that age...)

Imagine being a College Aged mother, 24 years old. You have triplets, then because of this, you are sentenced without trial to jail for 1 year. To top it off, you're forced to watch them give each of your babies away to a complete stranger before they reach junior high.

Sad

So we said "That iz sad! We rezkyues her!" Very Happy

So they take the kittehs out of their jail, because people come. We have to fill out an application, and we talk about our past animal friends. Mom runs out to the car to get her money, while I go around the store buying items.

Sunshine, meanwhile, looks like this:

I call it "The Yard" - you know, as in a Prison Yard. She looks so tired and her spirit looks broken. Who wouldn't feel that way after being sent to jail for unknown sentence? We also find out she's 2 and 1/2 years old (30 in human years) - so that puts her birthday sometime near June.

We come back and pay for Sunshine. She still thinks that one other kitteh is going home and her life is destined to be behind bars. She doesn't even look at us, she keeps her eyes inside the glass at all times, and keeps to herself. Other kittehs play with each other, but Sunshine does not. She is depressed Sad

It makes me sad thinking about how she looked and acted even today Sad

But enough of that! Something happens, and Sunshine didn't know what it was - she was being lifted and put into the box she saw so many other kittehs put into.

She cries and meows as we get into the car, and her mews become frantic - like a kitten. So I partially open the box and give her pets and luvins. She doesn't know what's going on but she understands that much.

We arrive home as she is even more frantic, and I brought her inside the house, and opened the box.

She stayed in the box for nearly a half hour, then she left, and explored! Every corner, every stair, every rug, she sniffed them all! Periodically she would walk up to us and give an inquisitive meow, wanting us to answer whatever question she asked. I don't speak cat, but I know when they ask a question. All I did was give her some pets and she would go back to inspection duty.

Finally, it was time for late night t.v. and sunshine came over to spend some time with us. Mom, Sunshine and I just watched t.v. (well, Sunshine got luvins we watched t.v.). No more frantic meows Very Happy

We learned some things about her too -

* She had an infection or something in her right eye. We fixed it up right away. She didn't like the eyedrops, but she actually realized that the Eyedrops made it better. So even though she would shake her head when I used them, she tried to be brave and lifted her eyes up just for me to put the drops in. I managed to treat her 3 days in a row before she said "Enough! My eye is better!" (well she acted like that's what she said).

* She loved her new toys we got for her, this was the first - I call it her little hunter's blind. When I went to take the picture, she specifically hugged it with her paw and meowed at me. At first I thought it was her just saying hello, but then I noticed she makes the same motions and meows for any item we give to her. She was thanking us!
When we play chase the butterfly (it's a folded up piece of paper tied in the center to a string, and flayed out at the edges), she will use the blind as a tank. She pushes and roles the tank forward from inside in order to capture and kill the target without seeing her. At first I thought she'd hate the color scheme, because there is no pink or green, but to my surprise, she'd have it no other way!

* This is her scratching post - we gave it to her and she looked at it then meowed at us. I patted it and then "scratched it" then motioned to sunshine and gave her pets. She picked up real fast. For about two weeks after, she'd walk up to us, meow, then walk away, stop and turn to make sure we were following. Then she'd lead us to her scratching board, flop down, hug it, then meow, and pull it close to her - only one thing to explain that: she was thanking us. "Look what I got! Ty!"
Do you see that hair thingy behind her? I have a story with that - she loves hair thingies. She will pull and snap them. But, that's not all. We discovered she has FAVORITE COLORS! Any Hair Thingy with Pink on it she will choose over any hair thingy any other color.
To top it off, she will separate them by color. Blues will go to the side or otherwise discarded. Pinks will go to her favorite spot in that room. Blue with pink bands will be near the pinks but separate from them. She picks them up and moves them. She only does this when we have too many to count (such as 8 in the same spot). If there are fewer than that, she'll just leave them be.
She also has favorite "blankets", whether they are mom's robes or actual blankets. If there is no tactile difference between the fabrics, she will choose the Pinkest of the fabrics. She doesn't really like blue. However, she does like a light electric/neon green. Yes, it is the colors to which she's attracted. Same with clothes. We tested this out many times. I wonder if she sees the same colors we see or if they are fantastically different!

* This is her friend, she sleeps with him sometimes, but not always. She will sometimes move him to wherever she wants to lay down. It's very cute because she will hug him real tight if she decides to sleep with him. I've never known a kitteh to do that Very Happy

When it was time to go to sleep, Sunshine slept with my mom on her bed. The next night, she slept with me. The first thing I noticed was nightmares.

She'd whimper and cry out in her sleep while moving frantically. When I put my hand on her, she'd wake up with a start and meow and look around, I'd pet her and she'd grab my hand with her paw, extend her claws and pull it close. Obviously I didn't want to get scratched, so I moved my hand to where she patted it down. She then slept on my arm.

It is true.

She had horrific nightmares for the first couple of months. It was just awful. It made me so sad, but, I knew that when I touched her, she'd grab my hand and they would stop.

There was also a black and white neighborcat that was using our back yard as a place to sleep (or what you can call our back yard). The kitty gave off some really violent and deep rumbling meows to Sunshine. I know he or she was calling Sunshine names and threatening her. One night, Sunshine had a nightmare, I patted her, and she Looked at me, Meowed, then perked her head up, and bounded as fast as she could to the Kitchen. She rushed to the back door and inspected it, then rushed to the kitchen window and back.

She was on a mission. The only possible explanation I can have is she had a nightmare about that cat coming through the back door, it was an evening after the black and white cat made nasty sounds through the window and door. It took me about 5 minutes to calm Sunshine down, and another 15 to bring her out of the kitchen. She was a Kitteh on a MISSION in the KITCHEN!

Soon, sure enough, her nightmares became few and far between. They also weren't as noisy or violent. She rarely has them now, but she still sleeps with me. I'm "her boy". I don't know if that means she thinks we're an item, or if we're soulmates, but whatever it is, I'm hers. When I left to Connecticut after months of preparing my patent for its debut (something Mr. Maulkin seems to believe I lied about), she freaked out. She blamed mom, apparently thinking mom kicked me out of the house. Oh, she gave mom the cold shoulder. She'd go to my room and my bed, refuse to play with mom, and just watched and waited for me to come home.

6 days = an eternity in cat years (ok 6 days is more like 1 month).

I came home and Sunshine gave me the Business. It was the most demanding MEOW I've ever heard from her. The most demanding. I had to beg and luv her up for a half hour before she forgave me. Good thing she was in a forgiving mood ;D Well, we both knew she couldn't stay angry for forever.

Oh one last thing - we knew when we got her she was 2 1/2. That put her birthday in the summer (an unknown date of which to be sure). Being that she was named Sunshine, we decided to celebrate it on the Summer Solstice. It was an appropriate date to give her extra luvins.

This is my Valentine's Day story! I hope it inspires you to rescue a kitteh or a puppeh if you have extra room in your home ^_^

Aww!

All of my animals are rescue animals, the most recent a pup that someone shot in the leg. She's adorable.

*is slightly tempted to start posting pictures of animals...*

^-^ Awl, I loved that story! (As a devoted cat lover, I read every word) Sunshine is very cuute =3 her little habits make me chuckle- I want moar pictures pls D8

Our kitten Tabatha was rescued as well- She'd been in the 'cat-clink' for quite some time, Australian's dont like cats very much usually ={ Though I dont blame them, our cat Silvester once caught and killed a wallaby xD

She's doing well these days-when we first got her she was frail and as skinny as a twig (if twigs can be skinny), and now shes a great bit lovable lardball who follows her pet (me) to the bathroom at night to make sure I'm coming back to bed =)

Maiko Very Happy I am honored that your first post is to comment on my accounting of Sunshine Very Happy

I have lots of pictures, but few turn out well, usually due to Sunshine moving or blinking her eyes.

I have several other tales to regale you Very Happy

Second week of April I was very sick, sunshine followed me around. She would literally meow demandingly if I didn't take an afternoon nap. So, I'd take a nap (she'd lead me to the bed and pat it, then meow). I mean, this is communication here that nobody can deny.

So I'd go to sleep, and she'd sit on her perch by the window (I should take a picture of her perch). She would watch me sleep. If I got up in a short time, she'd meow at me. If I slept or stayed on the bed for more than an hour it'd be ok with her.

Other things, when I'd have a headache she'll sniff my head, and meow.

She is adamant about afternoon naps now. More so than before. She'll meow at me, until I pay attention to her, then lead me to the bed. She'll then jump up on it and pat the bed and meow, then curl up. if I leave the room she'll follow and repeat.

Just two (or maybe now three) days ago, she had a vicious nightmare (hrm what was it, Tuesday 11th or Wednesday 12th? I can't remember which day now, only that it was frightening). How do I know?

I am in my computer room which is directly across of my bedroom. She was sleeping in my bedroom. Then, out of the blue I hear - "MEOW!? MEOW!?" Very loud two meows in a row. I yell "Sunshine! I'm here in the computer room!"

She then gave several quick meows, and she ran into the computer room as fast as possible. When she saw me she stopped meowing. She took a breath (you could actually hear her breath in!), she meowed once, then laid down. She was afraid that I was gone!

I can only imagine what her nightmare was. But there are two things of which I am sure:
* In her nightmare one or both of her "giants" (my mom and/or myself), were gone or hurt.
* She was frightened, and needed to make sure we were ok. Though maybe it was centered around me because she ran to me and not mom? But maybe just because I was closest?

That's when I thought again about how she was abandoned, and u know... it breaks my heart to think about that. I'm just glad I could rescue Sunshine. But there are so many other animal friends in the universe who are suffering just as much and more than Sunshine, and I wish I could be a friend to them all Sad

Sunshine doesn't "know my name" as Kevin, but.... she knows my name as boy. She also knows the words "Food" and "mom" and "Love" and "Computer Room" and "Upstairs" and "Downstairs".

How do we know? If Sunshine walks up to mom and she meows, mom will run down the list of words. Most of the time Mom will say "Do you want boy?" and sunshine will meow. Mom will say "Boy is" and then "upstairs or downstairs or computer room"

Sunshine will then run right to me. Some people say animals are dumb - well, I can speak for my sunshine - she is not dumb. She knows these words and she will react! Mom might have to say "Upstairs" twice, but sunshine will then run right up to me. You can't fake that. We also never trained her. She picked those words up on her own. That's intelligence that just can't be denied.

Speaking of Bathrooms -- LOL omg what is it with kittehs and bathrooms?! My sunshine just finds them fascinating!

When I go to the bathroom, sometimes sunshine follows and she just gets so upset that I'm going to the bathroom!!!!

She meows and meows!

Worried I might fall in maybe? lol It's not even that I'm in the BR that long! Even if it's to wash my hands!

One time, she followed me to the bathroom and I didn't shut the door all the way, it was shut, but it didn't click. I then saw this little shadow appear before the door through the light at the bottom. I waited a moment, and I said "I'll be right out sunshine!"

She then said "mew?"

I said "Yes I see your shadow, I'll be right out."

Sure enough, the door creaked and this little paw appeared through the thing as if to wave. It was like "ok if u need helpz u ask me!" It was one of the funniest things I've ever seen.

I have so much more to talk about concerning her, but I should stop there Smile

I'd love to hear about your kitteh too Very Happy

Silvester killed a Wallaby? Somebody better warn Rocko!!!!!!!!!

Well guess who came up to my computer room just now complaining that I wasn't getting ready for bed!

I wonder if she thinks we're married or somethin! lol

it's ok, she's my soulmate Very Happy She takes care of me when I'm sick and tries to make sure I grow up to be a well behaved cat lol

^-^ Well I did say I'm a devoted cat lover, so I was pretty much hooked by the title of this topic xD And sunshine is such a sweet name, we originally named our cat "Tabatha" but she only really responds when I call her "Kitkat" or try imitate their complex speech patturn by meowing at her. I dont know what I'm telling her in cat-language, but it sure gets her attention! Sometimes we have cat conversations where I'll meow and she'll mimic me. Oh what secrets we have shared, it's even a secret to me!

Cat's are extremely intelligent, you're Sunshine is definately a testament to that Smile My cat doesn't react much to human speech, but she does understand it, like when I say bathroom for instance she'll perk up! And lets not get onto the subject of food... She really loves it xD

Unfortunately she is very large for her breed and our vet says she needs to go on a diet, but she seems very happy the way she is (And ladies should be round and voluptuous!! Very Happy) and she IS fun to cuddle... That and it's hilarious when I play with her, she'll bound after me and the string and then she'll suddenly flop on her belly and go straight to sleep.

Quote:
Silvester killed a Wallaby? Somebody better warn Rocko!!!!!!!!!

LOL Well you don't see Rocko's Modern Life on television anymore, who knows? Maybe Silvester actually killed this beloved superstar marsupial? o_o Somebody aught to tell Heffer! He might be next Twisted Evil

And I dont know why kittens are so fixiated by bathrooms (especially the toilet, Tabatha is REALLY fascinated by that device, especially when i flush it to gage her reaction Smile )! Its a mindboggling mystery! And when you think about the significant symbolic meaning behind the infamous bathroom as depicted in Hitchcock's movie 'Psycho', you start to wonder if cats are realling the evil overlords of the earth >_>

My cats however are not evil, sometime's Tabatha will come into the bathroom after me and jumps into the bathtub (Mind you it's empty) and drink some of the leftover water in there xD I dont know, does soap give it that extra punch that cats adore? Guess I wouldnt need catnip anymore.

And that's another thing; Catnip. Just saying it sends my cat Silvester WILD. Unfortunately our dog ate our entire stock of catnip one night so he can't get his weekly 'high's, but when he was he'd be so funny! He'd actually SMILE at us with his goofy grin and be all bashfull and affectionate like an amorous drunk, rubbing against us and batting his paws at our hands and clinging to us like a teddybear.

OH! And one last thing... Tabatha liked to come to school with me! Well she'd definately try to come with me; she'd be sitting on a high perch as I put my backpack on, and as I walk to her to say our goodbye's, she'd climb onto my shoulder and onto the top of my backpack and just sit there. Refusing to be budged, and she'd meow so loudly if anyone tried to remove her!

Sorry if this is a bit too much, I get really passionate about cats xD But it was a real pleasure hearing about your Sunshine and besotting you with tales of mine. I could put up pictures of my babe's if you'd like so you can get a better mental image of Tabatha as she crawls onto my chest at night and paws at my face as I try to sleep so she can get some urgent backrubbing! She's really sweet though, she'll never leave my side when I'm sick, and sometimes she'll give my face a bath if I had a high fever.

You've got a guardian angel in cat form Very Happy

I like your stories ^_^

So I promised to tell you about the goose and duckling.

There's a pair of geese, husband and wife (they mate for life u kno) and they lost their eggs this year. It's very sad. They are Canadian Snowgeese.

But they decided to help protect the other goslings of some other normal northern geese. They helped to protect them as they grew up, watching the edges.

So they already have a history of protecting other animal babies ^_^

So this duckling was lost, and all alone on another side of this lake under a bridge. It was been crying all day, while trying to huddle near some geese, but still not with it's mom.

Well i tried my best to bring the duckling over to some other ducks by throwing food and grass into the water - like breadcrumbs back to the ducks. The duckling would only go so far, but then here comes the female snowgoose. It's honking as loud as it can. The duckling follows by the Goose, crying out it's high pitched cries.

The goose lead the duckling all around the lake, until finally they came upon the momma duck and the duckling left with her.

The sad story is --- there was only one duckling. The momma duck clearly lost her other ducklings to either cold weather, fox, raccoon or muskrats Sad

But, it was a happy end to the day ^_^
