Maybe wee drams of Penderyn Single Malt Whisky... maybe two for the Kiwi... It fits my Welsh sensibilities..

Okay ZombieDish, this is for you and the guy you work with…

The Large Hadron Collider is the greatest esoteric experiment man has created…

…and not for what the experimenters decry as their intent: the advancement the Standard Model of Cosmology. llamallama

Schrödinger’s Cat Thought Experiment… Nerdy A quick overview is nessecary:
  1. A cat is put in a quantumly isolated box, i.e., no observer can peek in
  2. A diabolical mechanism is present that will kill the cat by sheer chance half the time with each planned observation.
  3. By the EPR (Einstein, Podolsky and Rosen) quantum mechanical interpretation the cat is both Alive and Dead in the box
  4. Upon observation the cat resolves itself into either a Living or Deceased state

This was the humorous conjecture by Schrödinger to criticize A. Einstein, B. Podolsky, and N. Rosen 1935 article, Can Quantum-Mechanical Description of Physical Reality Be Considered Complete?… Though Schrödinger intended the thought experiment to ridicule the EPR article, it grew a life of its own after EPR successfully predicted quantum entanglement… It was true at least for photons!

Arrow To reconcile these multiple states and exactly WHO qualified to be an observer—Resolver of Worlds—Hugh Everett in 1972 came up with the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics…

Idea From this, many clever physicists thought about the Schrödinger’s Cat Thought Experiment from the cat’s viewpoint as an observer… and out popped the notions of Quantum Suicide (QS) and Quantum Immortality (QI). The later notion is that a given observer can't die because there will always be a universe, no matter how improvable, where he/she/it will survive to continue observing… Shocked

Question So why did I say “The Large Hadron Collider is the greatest esoteric experiment man has created…"

Okay then Very Happy
Let’s assume that any LHC experiment preformed will have globally lethal consequences… Dead

  1. Then if QI is true, we will see a series of remarkable coincidences that will prevent the experiment ever being preformed…
Such as the collapse of the economic support for Big-Science… Rolling Eyes
It’s already happened to the American Superconducting Super Collider! Gah! WTF?!

  2. It will also answer Fermi's Paradox—the lack of evidence for extraterrestrial civilizations…
They all eventually made LHC’s and became neutronium raisins under their suns DEEEEEAAATH!!!!
...except in a diminishingly small number of alternate universes. Neutral
The chances of more than one planetary civilization existing in any alternate universe is the product of these diminishingly small numbers. Gah! WTF?! "that's really small"

Nerdy aren’t thought experiments fun… whuuu?

Edit Add May 9, 2009: The History Channel's The Universe series has an episode: Parallel Universes that goes over some of the notions we talked about here. Wink

I think the string theory extrapolation is a little out there for what the collider can do, and a misinterpretation of the real affect of string theory. Though I'm not debasing you, I'm discussing the people who created that theory.

On a lighter note, it reminds me of this:

Erwin! What the hell did you do to the cat?” queried Mrs. Schröedinger of her husband. “It looks half dead!” (quantum rimshot)

“How are you able to visualize things in ten-dimensional hyperspace?” asked a reporter.
"That's easy,” replied the string theorist. “First I visualize it in n-dimensional hyperspace...,
... and then I just let n equal 10.” Hmmmm..... weeeeeiner....

Nerdy A Physics Proverb: To understand something means to derive it from quantum mechanics… llamallama which nobody understands.

The irony of quantum mechanics is that no one understands it, yet everyone tries to use it to prove their theories. In other words, modern scientists have gone no farther than the Greeks. The Greeks, having very little understanding of our planet, used the concept of earth, air, and fire. (These were the three elements of which they believed all things were made.) So, having nothing more than a vague (and ultimately incorrect) understanding of our plant, Greek philosophers tried to prove various points and theories of science. (Keep in mind that Greek philosophers did fine with logic and math. They just failed at science.) I think modern scientists have done the same with quantum mechanics.

Also, anyone else notice how the more scientists study quantum mechanics, the more they become confused? And have to change their theories? I'm pretty sure someone somewhere (or everywhere, depending on your quantum perspective Wink ) has missed some key element that would allow us to unlock the true secrets of quantum mechanics and avoid the speculations and errors that currently occur.

I understand Quantum Mechanics.

But then again I can also use a PURE rational notation to calculate an irrational number.

Maybe something's wrong with me Shocked

I've always considered myself on the more emotional side of the vulcan family tree.
