So I'm going on vacation this week. What does this mean for you? Absolutely nothing! Pastry updates next Friday, same as usual.

Luscious new gift art from Alice of Two Rooks! It looks clean, but smells so dirty!

I am trying to whip up the people from Sage Comics into doing a collective improv comic project. Enthusiasm is slow in coming, but I will corrupt them all! Mwhahaha, I say! I started things off with a little contest to design the main character, and you can VOTE to determine which entry it will end up being. (You'll need to register at the Sage Comics forum to do so, but that's not so bad, is it?) Note: Just because I linked you (and obviously you're a reader of my comic) doesn't mean I'm asking you to vote for my entry! I like all the entries, myself, and I encourage you to go with the one you prefer.

I was thinking, this would be a good opportunity to remind people about the Stuff button, up there in the nav bar! Why? Well, for one thing, I've had a handful of people leave messages on my deviantart gallery, dazed and amazed at finding me on that site! But the link has been in my Stuff section forever! I've actually been on deviantart longer than this comic has been going on.

Also! This week I've finally updated my side comic, Outrageous Teen Assassin Aiko, after almost a year of not doing so. And I've decided, I should probably link to it in Stuff, even though I link to each new page in my art blog, Jogging, as I post them (This is also Stuff that is linked). Before you read OTAA, you may want to read OCAA, Outrageous Child Assassin Aiko, the 24-hour comic of which OTAA is the sequel. There are even one or two more things of interest there - things that are not strictly Flaky Pastry related, but done by me nonetheless!

Notice how I didn't put any links in this whole entry? It's because I want you to check out the Stuff button!

I admit it was mostly for me to increase traffic and get to know other webcomic creators, the tricks of their (our) trade. I also got some fanart from fellow members! And the only downside (if it can be called that) is the diagonal banner you see in the top corner. But it does link you, the reader, to a random comic every time you reload! I encourage you to check them out! There are a lot of good ones to discover on there.

First off, welcome to Fans of Home on the Strange who followed the link banner from there to here. I hope you'll like Flaky Pastry! And especially, thank you to the anonymous fan who purchased that advertizing for my comic!

Halloween! It's tomorrow, but you still get a shiny picture today. It's the main cast of Flaky Pastry, out trick-or-treating! Probably Nitrine dragged them all out. And of course, it's also available as a wallpaper! I say of course, but I didn't think of it in previous years when I did specials like this. I should probably get around to correcting this soon.

About the costumes! I'm sure most of you will recognize at least one or two. To find out what the others are, feel free to peruse my webcomic links, you'll find all you need to know.

Today I recommend you read the new comic, and after that go check out the new wallpapers. Well yeah, because one of the panels today is highly wallable. I also added another new wallpaper, based on a comic from a few weeks ago, that I had planned to do at the time but sort of forgot, and another from longer ago. All this reminds me that it's pretty easy to make wallpapers from existing comic panels. SO GUYS. If you have some... favourite panels from previous comics, why don't you let me know on the message board? I may just make wallpapers with them, if feasible.

The plot thickens?

I'd like to take this occasion to thank all the readers who vote for my comic on Buzzcomix and Topwebcomics (by clicking on the buttons in the sidebar). Especially since I don't have any of the customary 'Vote incentives' that many other comics do, and yet thanks to you all Flaky Pastry is very often within the Top 100 on Buzzcomics (and usually not much further than 120 on Topwebcomics). I personally think vote incentives are a dishonest way to hoodwink people into voting for you. Whenever I draw Flaky Pastry-related material outside of the comic itself, you can be sure it'll be publically visible, wether or not you vote for me on those sites. I hope you vote anyway, but I won't force you!

As a matter of fact, these days on my sketch blog, Jogging, there are some hawt swimsuit pictures of various Flaky Pastry characters. Enjoy!

Old characters, new characters, old characters! I don't understand those comics where you have two to four main characters, and never or rarely anyone else. Sure there is lots of room for interaction with just those few, but I know -I- couldn't just always draw the same characters over and over!

It's bad enough that there's rarely ever a Flaky Pastry without one of the three girls.... Out of 135 (so far), there are only 8 (EIGHT!) (or nine, depending how you count this one) comics where none of the three appear! And four of those have the neighbour in them, and he's practically a main character anyway.

Again, I'm happy to change their clothes relatively often! Variety for the win.

Am I ever glad I decided Flaky Pastry would be the sort of comic where characters change clothes sometimes! It's challenging sometimes, coming up with new outfits relatively often, but it's ultimately fun! And keeps things fresh. And uh... I think my main characters are easy enough to recognize even though they dress differently! You'll notice I'm not afraid of changing hairstyles, too! Though it's not very noticeable here. Also: 126 strips into the comic, finally the answer to a question everyone wonders about? Perhaps! It's also time for the periodic cast page update.

Thus ends another story arc! Granted, I've been epiloguing (prolonging?) for almost ten strips now, but it's really over now! Granted, this arc didn't have much in the way of plot! It was really just a way for me to develop characters a bit, to just stick them in a room and have them interact and interreact. Nitrine got a suit, her cousins were introduced, Sir Manfred got out of the dungeon (so to speak), the neighbour did some stuff, Kurt got more spotlight than I thought he would! For a story arc with no plot, a lot happened!

In fact, from the way I arbitrarily separated past story arcs (see the Archive), this past arc was the second longest, after Real Adventure Dungeon Quest, which was pretty long. It was even longer than the romantic arc! I have lots of things left to decide about the next arc, but it will probably be more epic, with confrontations, suspense, blood, amorality! That is, if I don't decide to do something else first.

I'm curious how this particular page of the comic will be received! Will people scratch their heads? Will they understand what is being implied? Will they find it awesome? Will they wonder what that has to do with anything? Well, what do YOU think? The Forum is a good place to discuss it!

Don't look at me! I did research, I swear the skeleton is shaped exactly like that! Incidentally, this comic has no less than FOUR visual references to actual internet things - as well as a bunch of random junk which refers to nothing in particular. And a naked anthro.

Also, new fanart! Hawt!

Hey, guys. Some of you might be interested in knowing: I'm offering to do commissions for folks. You might not get a physical drawing to hold in your hands from it, but I'll happily draw my interpretation of your original character for a modest fee. Hurry, the number of those I'll do is after all limited. More info can be found at my deviantart page.

Not much more new stuff today. I did add a new, bigger banner for linking. Haha. I like that tagline, 'Fun - Danger - Romance - Frosting'. Better than the old 'A comic about nothing in particular'. That was pretty much the concept at the start, but like the About page says, it's really become about something over time, hasn't it?

It strikes me that perhaps these 'Comic Updated' links may be less relevent now that the main page -is- the updated comic. But they may still matter on the older newsposts below? And before being an older newspost, a newspost has to be a newer newspost.

Big news! As big as your screen? I've put up some snazzy wallpapers. They're lifted straight from the comic, but (of course) much higher-resolution, and pretty epic. If I ever do get that donation button up, it'll probably lead to original wallpapers, not from already-in-the-comic. That's my idea right now anyway.

Comic Updated!
Yes, on a Tuesday!
And as you can probably see, that's not all.

  • I've put the latest comic on the main page! Some comics do it, some don't. I hadn't up until now, but I decided to give it a try. I liked my previous splash image, though, so I included it in the title at the top instead of completely losing it.
  • Which makes the 'latest comic' button lead to the main page
  • Because of this, I removed 'Comic' from the navigation buttons atop the page. Also because there's no longer a blurb on the main page, I added an 'About' link, and I created a new 'Archive, page, instead of linking to Ohnorobot.
  • There's a sidebar here next to the news here on the front page! But why?
  • Well, as you see I sold out and registered to these vote-based 'Comic ranking' sites. Hopefully my soul is not forfeit by this act. So far I haven't sold out to the point of having actualy 'vote incentives', so if you vote for me it will be just because you think my comic is great, and not beause you want to see secret images that you couldn't see otherwise. I don't know, I may put some images there later.
  • I also put links to help people keep track of updates.
  • Later on, this space will be used for various additional things... If I need to have some persistent news, that remains visible for a long time. I'll probably put some more Project Wonderful ads, and maybe a Paypal Donation button. (possibly leading to ever more secret pictures? Psh.)
The site is still somewhat in flux, so don't be surprised if a few details change again in the coming weeks.

Oh... yes. About updating Tuesday. I can't say I'll commit to doing that all the time from now on, but at least for a while, this is how it's going to be. Two comics per week. One Tuesday evening, one Friday evening. Enjoy!

You may not have noticed! But this and the two comics previous were meant to sort of expand the characterization of each individual 'cousin', as opposed to having them as just a group. Ironically, these strips were presented in the reverse order of how they're usually listed (Griplen, Graplen, Groplen), despite the fact that it may have fitted better story-wise to do it in the right order? But it could not be helped, I just came up with the idea of each strip in that order. I'm mostly picking at nits to have something to write here, though. :D

Since I don't often have much to say here, I'll tell you about some more comic links I've added! Some I've been reading for a while, or that I discovered just yesterday.

I don't think I need to say much about Order of the Stick, since it's one of the aboslute most popular comics out there. But it is that with good reason, and if you're one of the two or three people that don't read it already, give it a try!

One with a less daunting backlog is Marry Me, which is gearing up to be a quirky romantic comedy about a pop star and some guy she married. And... I love the art!

Last but not least, the whimsical adventures of Minus, a strange little girl. I... well... it's kind of surreal, but awesome?

I have just received my Flaky Pastry merchandise! I ordered some stuff from my own Cafepress store. So now, I can walk around everywhere with my Flaky Pastry t-shirt, and people will ask: Hey, what's that? And I can tell them: That's my webcomic! You should check it out!

Or rather, I -could- do that... if it wasn't still freezing cold outside with snow everywhere! I also got the clock, of course, because it's probably the coolest thing ever, and the pastry apron - because. Hahaha. When I get more time I should make some more punchy, original t-shirts, but I might never get motivated if people don't show more interest in the store XD

Let this be a lesson to us all: If you're making a webcomic, and you suddenly feel like putting in a panel with every character in it, just for fun, with no discernable story reason... Don't!

Now I've touched on this subject before, but let's do it again. Just about every slightly important character you see in the comic, has had a previous existence inside my head, and comes with all sorts of stories never told, or told only to some very few people. All this to say: Sir Manfred returns to his roots in the comic today. And if you're someone who knew him before the comic, and you didn't see this coming... SHAME AND STUPOR! You lose points.

Most of you though, just know him as the hungry landowner of our girls, and for you I say: enjoy the comic!

The Ferrett has written a largely positive review of Flaky Pastry, which also doubles as an editorial on the appeal and necessity of both serious comics and funny comics (I'll let you guess which category Flaky Pastry fits into), and the analysis thereof. This is the first review I've gotten, as in something more than one or two sentences, and not written by someone I know. And this is cool! So, thank you, The Ferrett! And as always, welcome to new readers! The comic is there for you, every friday night (saturday morning?), and you're more than welcome to post on the forum if you have comments!

That... was... SOMETHING.

One hundredth Pastry is also the largest pastry ever! All this because... I couldn't resist answering more questions than I said I would. Because, after all, without all you faithful readers, I might have made it this far with the comic... but it would never have been this much fun! So, even though I already said it, and someone else says it for me in the comic... Thank you, thank you all! I hadn't imagined I would make it this far... though I had planned for it, as evidenced by the three-digit numbers on each strip... guess I haven't planned for reaching 1000 strips? But only time will tell!

Happy Valentine's day, everyone! Yes, even those who don't have a significant other! No need to feel bitter about that... I'm sure you have lots of better things to be bitter about! There is an update today, because of the holiday, and because the comic that would normally happen next friday just happened to fit TOO well, especially considering the strip from last year.

But wait, that's not all! If you follow the numbers at the top of the strips, you see that #100 is coming up soon. That's a pretty big thing for me! So I am planning a little something-something. Read all about it on this forum thread.

I know some might see this in a negative light (I bet you wouldn't have noticed if I wasn't posting about it!), but it has me pretty excited: there are now ads on Flaky Pastry. These are provided by Project Wonderful, a project which is wonderful indeed! It has allowed me, with its free registration easy-to-use features and bidding system, to get more exposure for my comic. Now others can get exposure from my website, for the low low price (per day) you can see below the currently displayed ads.

Also, new comic links! (they are boldened on the links page - but feel free to click all of them - and the ads above the page, why not? - nobody makes money based on the number of clicks)

Technically the story arc ended last week, but next week is a Christmas thing, after which I'll start the new story arc. That means this week was all alone! Sad. So in the meantime, a gag with Kurt and Nitrine!

The Cast section has been updated with pretty much aaaaalll the new characters that have appeared in this story arc. Man, when will I ever stop adding them? No, of course not! A surprising thing I noticed: The male characters now outnumber the females! Knowing me, I find that surprising.

Added some more links in the bar at the top here! There's the much-needed Archive button, which made me change the Comic button some. Also of interest is the Stuff link, which is Stuff I do outside Flaky Pastry! It's mostly a way to pimp my art blog, Jogging (hint! hint!) and my deviantart page (hint! hint!), but also a good place to link to some other side projects I have done/will do, such as my 24-hour comic, and that old chicken comic I contributed to way back in the day! This week you get some... site news! News about the state of the site. Hopefully you didn't notice this, but earlier this week, I totally went over my monthly bandwidth quota. So the site Went offline! Thankfully it took only a few hours to upgrade my obsolete hosting plan, and everything's better now! So I guess that was a good thing? A sign that my comic is gaining popularity?

Also, you might notice that there is now at the bottom of each comic page a button like this one: This means that I've registered my comic at ohnorobot.com, enabling text searches on my comics! But for that, they need to be transcribed first. I already went on a transcription spree by myself, and transcribed the dialog from comics 1 through 52, and will probably keep adding some as time goes by. But you, the readers, can also participate in the transcription effort! Note that you can even go to the comics I already typed in, and add scene descriptions and stuff.

It's only a question of time before I set up an RSS feed for the comic. In the meantime, you who like to be told when the comic updates can still register to onlinecomics.net or thewebcomiclist.com, both good ways to keep track of webcomic updates, including Flaky Pastry!

Also a good thing to remember is... the forum! There's a link to it at the top of the page. I know people visit this site, because.. I exceeded my bandwidth limit... but I don't often hear from you! The forum is a good place for comments, questions and the like. But not for pharmaceutical ads.

Oh yeah... Comic Updated!
